At University Park, the 650 students in grades kindergarten through sixth will observe a moment of silence followed by a brief school-wide assembly, but any other Sept. 11-related instruction will be handled in the classrooms, Principal Pat Willingham said.
"We're going to observe it individually," Willingham said, "because there's such a difference in the degree of understanding from the younger kids to the older kids.We do things that are appropriate to grade level."
University Park students are participating in Character Week, a series of lesson plans and books that touch on good traits, such as character, bravery and responsibility, in commemoration of Sept. 11.
"Again, this will be a class-by-class approach, rather than an extensive explanation to one large group of students," Willingham said."The kindergartners don't have any sense of where New York is, and no sense of time has been developed yet."
On Wednesday, nearly all schools plan to hold commemoration ceremonies that are "age-and grade-appropriate," educators' terminology for honoring those who lost their lives in a way that children can understand and deal with.
Ceremonies here and throughout California will likely start with Gov.Gray Davis' mandated moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. PDT.
