asks Steve Willingale, acting CEO, of the Penrith Valley Economic Development Corporation.

"As well as being based in Penrith and employing local people, these are some of the products which are successfully beating their competition on the world market," he said while leafing through a publication distributed to potential investors in the city, at a recent seminar conducted by Penrith City Council.

"The products may not be stamped "Made in Penrith" but they represent the technological edge and marketing expertise which exists in the city that wins export orders and boosts the local economy."

Mr Willingale said the manufacturing industry in the Penrith region had a long history, one which has involved restructuring and globalisation in recent decades."Those which have weathered the "storm" are innovative, have introduced world-class practices, and are export oriented," he said.

He said Crane Copper Tubing (copper tubing), ACO Polycrete (polymer concrete), Appalachian Log Homes (log homes) ASP Plastics (custom moulding), GPC Electronics (electronic products), Lindsay PieMaking Equipment (pie making equipment), Rondo Building Services (light gauge rolledformed steel products), were among the many local manufacturers using advanced-technology techniques and equipment, and taking on the world and winning.

"Maybe we should have ‘Made in Penrith, Australia' stamped on every product going overseas. It would increase our international recognition no end," he said.

Local efforts to set up a one-stop-shop for job seekers and employers was a major outcome of an intensive two-hour forum on overcoming the skills shortage in the Penrith area, said Steve Willingale, acting CE0, of the Penrith Valley Economic Development Corporation (PVEDC).
    ...
Mr Willingale said discussion ranged across issues such as transport, trade skills, flexibility of employers, training delivery, the lack of expertise that owners of small and medium size firms had in administering relevant paperwork, older people re-entering the workforce, the need to "excite" school students about the trades and the variety of work within them, school curricula with a bias for potential university students and language difficulties.
    ...
It was really the start of a series of future gatherings to find solutions to the trade skills shortage problem," said Steve Willingale, acting CEO, of the Penrith Valley Economic Development Corporation.

"Essentially a lot of individual organisations have viewpoints that have not been voiced in one room.So now they are all (recorded) to be analysed, and a considered effort will be made to go forward to solve the problem," he said.

Mr Willingale said a number of participants lamented the demise of the Commonwealth Employment Service (CES) and WestJobs, a regional employment initiative. He said the forum's proceedings would be published with copies sent to participants.

A look at the results of local students in the 2007 HSC, alone, highlights how clever our local teenagers are," said Steve Willingale, acting CEO, of the Penrith Valley Economic Development Corporation.

"That cleverness, nurtured by determined teachers and supportive parents, spotlights the quality of education in Penrith and the surrounding area and bodes well for the region's economic, social and cultural development."

Mr Willingale said such development contributed to the image and reputation of Penrith Valley as a progressive area with the capacity to attract ‘higher-order' professional and managerial people to live locally, in the knowledge that their children will receive a good education.

He said the larger the local pool of highly qualified residents the greater the interest of public and private organisations to invest in Penrith.

"A glance through the local newspapers shows the potential of our HSC students as they embark on further study and the development of their careers, which directly or indirectly, will underscore the future of the city," he said.

Mr Willingale said each of the recipients, in their own way, has contributed to safety and security, the welfare and the future of the city and its citizens."Their concern, compassion and commitment has to be applauded," he said.
