Former Eastleigh College student Sophie Willingale, and her colleague Helen Emery, are finally home, after their 35 day adventure across a third of the earth, in their Nissan Micra!
...
Luckily for Sophie, despite completing the Eastleigh College Car Maintenance course, which was a complimentary place offered by the College, she didn't have to put her new skills to the test!
The aim of the journey was to make it to the end, in a car with an engine of no more than one litre of power, whilst raising money for charity. The rally's principal charity this year is Mercy Corps Mongolia, which supports rural communities to meet their economic and social needs, helping them to become more self-sufficient.
Sophie and Helen also raised funds and took useful materials to the charity SWORDE-Teppa, based in Tajikistan.
...
Sophie said, "Although this is a tiny charity, with hardly any monetary support, it is phenomenally run, with the best facilities and is a real life line for the people in the area."
Sophie and Helen shared the driving between them, and only stopped for five days within the 35, due to delays with border problems and the car's CV joint shearing off!
...
Despite the constant driving and tiredness, Sophie said, "We made such good friends and experienced a whole different world, I would do it all over again!"
