PDA chairman and president Tommy Ty Willing explains, "For some, being afflicted with a debilitating disease such as diabetes means death. It is death of lifestyle and well being."
Having pursued his Fellowship on Endocrinology at the University of Newcastle in the United Kingdom and the University of California in San Francisco, Willing has this to say to doctors who treat patients with Type 2 diabetes: "More than communicating scientific ways on how to manage a patient, a doctor has to empathize with his patients on how they feel. This, in turn, leads to closer relationship between the patient and the doctor which makes the management of the disease easier."
"As doctors, we can help our patients accept their condition, comply with treatment and manage diabetes by empathizing with their sufferings," Willing says.
Because of this, the Designs on Diabetes is a way for doctors to show and express their empathy.Since art is universal, Willing relates that creating artworks among doctors and Type 2 diabetes patients has proven to work effectively in expressing their emotions and denial of their condition.

However, to qualify, Willing explains that only doctors treating Type 2 diabetes are qualified to join.
