Prof. Song Willing to Express Regret

Korean-German scholar Song Du-yul, who is facing charges of violating the anti-communist National Security Law, said Saturday he will again express regret for his alleged pro-North Korean activities.

Through his lawyer, Song said he will make another expression of regret as the prosecution considers his past comments to be insufficient.

Despite questioning Song on eight occasions, the prosecution has not reached a decision on whether to indict him for his alleged ties with North Korea, and instead continues to demand Song make a more definite expression of repentance for his past activities.

Song, who returned here last month after 37 years in exile, is accused of serving as the 23rd highest member of the North's Politburo and accepting about $150,000 from Pyongyang while staying in Germany. He was also found to have joined the North¡¯s ruling Workers¡¯ Party in 1973.

On Friday, the 59-year-old professor of Muenster University said he felt "deep regret¡¯¡¯ over his past activities siding with the North, such as his membership to the Workers¡¯ Party and accepting money from North Korea. He said he will no longer term himself a "border rider¡¯¡¯ between South and North Korea, adding that he hoped his resolution to live here and abide by South Korean laws will be interpreted as choosing South Korea over North Korea.

But the Korean-German scholar¡¯s repeated pleas for leniency have not been enough to satisfy the prosecution, which is demanding Song to make an apology for his membership to the North¡¯s Politburo.

Song is reportedly unwilling to do so, as he has repeatedly claimed that he was not formally elected. However, he is expected to give some sort of statement regarding the matter tomorrow when he again appears before the prosecution.

Song has lived outside of Korea for 37 years. Why is he so desperate to go back to Korea now?Because Pyongyang has directed him to do his work for the Dear Leader in the South.
