Grazing Project Officer, Laura Willing, said, "The people of North Hampshire will be seeing more of the Trust over the next few years, as we have formed a partnership with the Ministry of Defence helping them to manage their land for wildlife by restoring grazing animals to specially protected heathlands in the area."
The Grazing for Biodiversity project is supported by the Countdown 2010 Biodiversity Action Fund, to enable conservation grazing in a new and productive way in the area.North Hampshire is rich in fantastic wildlife sites, many of which benefit from being grazed. However, as livestock farming has become much less common in the area, so conservation managers are struggling to find the animals that they so desperately need to assist them with the management of their sites.
Laura adds, "As well as working to bring grazing back to these areas, we also want to get local people involved, encouraging a greater understanding and sense of ownership for their local landscape. The walk this weekend shows just how important these sites are to local people and is a great start for us to meet those people."
