Kerry Willigan, associate director for the MBNA Career Education Center at Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown University, agrees that internships can help students confirm or eliminate their interest in a field.Regarding their impact on employability, Willigan said, "Internships are almost a requirement for employment in some fields.Public relations is one field that comes to mind in that regard."

Whyte said the Washington Center's internships generally offer "some financial assistance," and Willigan said "50-60 percent of the internships she sees at her school provide a stipend or hourly wage."
