    Nationally, 80 percent of the students in the program are minorities, and most of the programs are in urban schools where a majority of students get free lunches, said Robin Willig, senior vice president of external relations at the National Academy Foundation, which is based in New York.

    Most of the children are average students when they enter the program, and most would not be expected to go on to college, yet the foundation's exit surveys of its graduating students find that 80 percent plan to embark on a two- or four-year college-degree program, Willig said.
