    Owner: Tom Willard
    ...
In an uncertain economy, Tom Willard did the unthinkable: He dropped customers. But by risking a smaller customer base, Willard has watched Liftco's profits grow slightly over the last 18 months.

After buying the shop, which specializes in renting aerial booms and lifts and rough-terrain fork lifts to contractors, Willard ended the company's relationship with customers who weren't paying their bills on time. Instead, he focused on new growth.

"More than 90 percent of our customers have been great," he said. "Another 5 percent we've had to let go and the other 5 percent we are trying to work with."

Since Willard, 43, purchased the company in April 2007, Liftco's total revenue has grown about 1 percent and about 20 percent of the company's former customers have been replaced with new ones.

That strategy, along with cutting expenses, is how Willard has combated the economic slump.
    ...
When Tom Willard bought Liftco from Mike Perrow, who founded the company in 1991, there were 15 employees.
    ...
When your clients are primarily construction companies, you are going to see a reduction in sales, Tom Willard said.

"I've always said there is enough business for us and our competitors," he said.

Board member Tom Williard echoed these concerns.

"If we can't find a better way, we should do what's in front of us," Willard said."But I think there are two people in the room who know more," he said, referring to Enos and Principal Leo Kostelnik.

"If they recommend to take it off the table, I'll follow that," Williard said.
    ...
Williard pushed to have "alternative" removed, arguing that the staff and administration should still have the option of looking at reconfiguration.

County knocks air out of McEvoy windmill plan - [Cached Version]
Published on: 10/13/2005    Last Visited: 10/14/2005

,"Obviously [the commission's decision] is disappointing," said Tom Willard, owner of Sustainergy Systems in Inverness and project manager of the McEvoy windmill.
    ...
,"We're going to go back, look at it, and try to find a way to not impact the neighbors," Willard said after the commission hearing.

,"We're not going to give up.It's too important an issue."He said that the rejected site was chosen after four years of study and that it is by far the best spot for getting the most energy at a low cost while not affecting the environment.

,Now, he said, the McEvoy Ranch is going to look into solar energy, as well as continuing to evaluate wind energy.

,As for neighbors saying the windmill would look out of place in the countryside, Willard remarked, "It's unfortunate because that's what windmills look like.

,"We want to reduce and eliminate our environmental footprint," Willard said, "and we're basically told we can't do that."
