Named after Tony Williamson, an old friend and wise man who leads us all inexorably North, the Williamson Centre will place great emphasis upon traditional scholarship and field-based experiential education in various northern locales.
The activities of the Williamson Centre span a large portion of the year and take advantage of the climatological labratory that northern Aroostook County affords us.In particular we have made a specialty of winter outdoor education.During our "Sub-Arctic Themed Weekend" each February our students experience northern culture and natural history through activities such as "quinzee" snow shelter and igloo building, nordic skiing, and snow-shoeing, as well as lectures given by distinguished northern scholars.Past presenters have included Steve Cox, research associate with the Maine State Museum, William Fitzhugh, director of the Arctic Studies Center of the Smithsonian Institution, and Tony Williamson, consultant for the Labrador Inuit Association.
