Amid the rapid expansion of transnational connections, this seminar will explore the grassroots response to the problems and possibilities created by globalization.Beside the better-known globalization of finance, many non-governmental organizations are attempting to create transnational ties that strengthen communities weakened by rapid economic change. The work of environmental groups, labor unions, and peace organizations shows new possibilities to match the global reach of multinational corporations, national governments, and groups like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.Seminar participants will explore how these grassroots organizations look beyond the nation-state and nationalism to rethink politics and community in our global age.
