"We're going to, hopefully, start our first project, which is to move the Purple Heart Memorial behind the Wall of Names," said Terry A. Williamson, president of the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund.
"That will really kick off the restoration work, which will continue through 2009, while we try to raise enough funds to complete the redesign project."
The project, Williamson said, includes expanding the memorial's amphitheater while also relocating the Wall of Scenes for better access to the names of the 646 Philadelphians who perished in the Vietnam War.
Williamson updated those plans with area vets and residents during a public hearing Nov. 1 at the Independence Seaport Museum.
He will unveil the plans today at a Veterans Day announcement at the memorial site.
"The Wall of Scenes is 10 photos of the war, sandblasted into the granite wall on the Spruce Street side of the memorial," said Williamson, a Marine veteran of Vietnam.
"We want to, in effect, open it up or peel it back from the middle so it will enhance security, so the police can look in there.
"As importantly, it will create a greater sense of importance" for the memorial, he said.
...
The expansion project will cost $2 million; Williamson said that the fund has raised $500,000 for the restoration, set to begin later this year.
And, although Williamson said that the fund hasn't had as much interaction and feedback from fellow Vietnam vets as he would have liked, he believes that they would be thrilled with the project.
"We don't have as much contact as I'd like with relatives [of veterans], because it was dedicated 20 years ago and many of them lost their lives before 1975," Williamson said.
