GEIS President Terry Williamson, who is a member of the Mississippi Band of the Choctaw Nation, estimated about 20 students split between Hattiesburg and Gulfport campuses comprise the organization.
And the annual powwow, which runs through the weekend on the Southern Miss campus, is not only the students' chance to fellowship with members of other tribes but also to educate Hattiesburg residents on American Indian culture.
"We do this to promote Native American fellowship, understanding and scholarships for other students," Williamson said.
The event revolves around cultural presentations and numerous dances in which members of various tribes come together to honor their ancestors and keep their tribes' history and culture alive, Williamson said.
