Robert had joined the Navy in January 1944, then spent five months training and performing escort duties.

At the start of June, the ship left the Clyde, with the teenage coder unaware his first active service would be the liberation of France.

It was only when they were well on their way that the captain revealed the invasion plans.

He said: 'Going across the Channel on June 5 was a fantastic sight. The air was bristling with excitement.'

The Argonaut was a mile from the shore when the shell hit it.

Robert, who became a civil servant after the war, said: 'It went through one of the officer's cabins and out of the hull before exploding in the sea.
