Peter Williamson obtained his MD at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada and completed his specialty training in psychiatry and a research fellowship at the University of Toronto. He then returned to the University of Western Ontario where he established the Neuropsychiatry Division in the Department of Psychiatry which he now chairs.Dr. Williamson is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Diagnostic Radiology in the faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario, and cross-appointments as a scientist at the Lawson Health Research Institute and associate scientist at the Robarts Research Institute.
The Neuropsychiatry Research Group at the University of Western Ontario was one of the first in the world to apply magnetic resonance spectroscopy to understand the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders. The group's early studies published in the Archives of General Psychiatry demonstrated membrane and glutamatergic abnormalities in first episode, never treated schizophrenic patients suggesting neurodegeneration.More recent studies have confirmed these findings with high field proton and phosphorous magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
Dr. Williamson has more than 200 peer-reviewed papers, abstracts and invited lectures supported by grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the National Institute of Mental Health in the United States and several other agencies. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the first J.M.
