If you delve into SOA and look at what it really is you realise that it's much more than marketing hype, it's actually an approach to organising and managing the IT function to ensure it is aligned to and supporting business processes and objectives," said Mark Williamson, Managing Director, Diagonal Consulting.
The research also revealed that there is confusion around SOA, with 28% of IT directors stating that SOA is simply about software development and architecture. When you consider that it was first only really talked about in relation to web services and over time has become a major focus area for all the major software vendors it's easy to see why this perception exists.
"Organisations will be making a fundamental mistake if they simply look at SOA in terms of development and architecture. In fact, it is only one area of the SOA puzzle, at its core, SOA is about re-engineering the IT function so that it is able to embrace the development and re-use of services, that can then be pieced together to support a business process," Williamson continues.
...
This is how IT directors need to pitch it to their boards, they need to explain to CEOs and FDs that going down the road of SOA will enable their organisations to be more agile and respond faster to changes in the wider business environment," Williamson concludes.
The research was undertaken by Vanson Bourne, with 100 UK IT Directors in large enterprise organisations with over 1000 employees.
