Kelly WilliamsonCritterPix: Entrepreneur hopes to follow in Pixar's paw prints - 2005-07-11

Kelly Williamson has the chutzpah to believe he can grow his digital animation startup into the next Pixar.
    ...
Williamson opened San Rafael's CritterPix Studios in 2003 to make a movie based on "Ollie the Otter," a children's book he penned and self-published.He was a tech executive and author with fantasies of making movies, when a friend handed him $20,000 to launch his dream business.

Ripping a page from Pixar's early history book, Williamson set up CritterPix, a company capable of making many movies, rather than "a private film project LLC," which he understood to be less attractive to investors.Using his own cash and angel funding, Williamson hired a team of former ILM, Tippett, and Disney professionals, in addition to Pixar's Chris Rock to help him build the software and hardware pipeline needed to produce films.
    ...
"That's what Pixar did," Williamson said."They created themselves as a movie company, they sold equity to raise capital and went public after their first movie, 'Toy Story.' "

Williamson also learned what to avoid from Pixar's original deal with Disney, in which Pixar split profits with Disney, paid Disney a 10 to 15 percent distribution fee and was locked into seven films.CritterPix will receive 65 percent of profits and has committed to making only one film with New Regency (though it has a second script under development and two more in the queue). And unlike Pixar, which uses proprietary software and has a permanent staff of more than 700, Williamson chose off-the-shelf products and hires as-needed to keep costs down.
    ...
Williamson sought out Vogel last September to advise CritterPix.
    ...
With more than $2.5 million in angel funding, a movie deal and a big-name backer, Williamson sought additional cash.
