Executive Director and Head Instructor Joy Williamson is recognized by the National Women's Martial Arts Federation (NWMAF) as a Certified Self Defense Instructor.

Joy Williamson has been teaching self defense for over a decade.She got her primary training under EWSD's founder, Suzanne Pinette, and has trained with several other nationally renowned self defense instructors.Since taking the reins in 2004, Joy has been a leader in the Austin community in doing outreach to Austin's teen girls.Under Joy's direction, EWSD has begun offering regular free self defense workshops for teens.Joy has also worked with the YWCA, EWSD, and SafePlace to create Power Girls retreats where girls have the chance to gain all sorts of skills that help them to navigate the difficult waters of adolescence.And Joy has trained teen girls themselves as peer instructors.
Even while increasing EWSD's outreach with teens, Joy continues the tradition of providing services for adult women, as well as children and men.Joy's abilities as an instructor are garnering her a national reputation.In 2006 she was asked to be a member of a panel at the Self Defense Instructors' Conference sponsored by the National Women's Martial Arts Federation.
Joy also serves as the head instructor for Sun Dragon Martial Arts, which provides formal martial arts training with classes for women, girls, co-ed adults and co-ed children.
