Deputy Joseph Williamson received the Lifesaving Medal for using his personal four-wheel-drive truck to rescue an 8-year-old girl and her parents during the torrential rains on Aug. 1, 2006.The girl, who was on dialysis, and her family, were trapped in a trailer on Chicken Farm Road as fast-rising water flooded nearby roadways.

Williamson said he was glad to be honored but thinks all sheriff's office employees who helped during the storms last summer were just as worthy of the recognition.

"In my heart everyone was a hero,"

Sheriff's Deputy Joseph Williamson was honored for going beyond the call of duty during Sunday's Celebrating Community Heroes event at United Blood Services in observance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

When heavy rains hit the region Aug. 1, Williamson was on his way to work when he realized his personal vehicle would be more useful than his department unit.

He returned to work in his lifted, Ford F150 pickup truck and made his way to areas in the county that were not accessible for many other rescue workers.Among those he helped pull to safety was a girl who was paralyzed and on dialysis.

"I was the only one that could access the area," he said, adding that all his co-workers deserve recognition."I'm accepting this on behalf of everyone at the Sheriff's Department."

Eight other law enforcement personnel and Barnett-Harley Davidson were also honored.

"The record highs in El Paso have claimed the lives of several elderly in the city and county," said sheriff's Deputy Joseph Williamson, who collected the fans from the school."And in our investigation it was discovered that lack of air conditioning and ventilation possibly caused the deaths."

Williamson, who said he was impressed with the children's donation, said the fans will be given to the Area Agency on Aging, which will distribute them to elderly residents.

"When we first heard about it, we were surprised they came up with so many new fans," he said."It was amazing.
