Jim Williamson joined the Metallurgy Department at Imperial College in 1965 to study glass-ceramics produced by the nucleaction and crystallisation of glasses made from metallurgical slags. He joined the teaching staff when the undergraduate course was expanded to include materials science. He was made Professor of Materials Chemistry in 1998.Over the years he has taught many different aspects of the materials science course, in particular topics on non-metallic materials, including polymer science, ceramics, glass science, high temperature phase equilibria and corrosion. His research interests in combustion processes and the properties of the residues and deposits began when it was realised that many of the techniques used to study metallurgical slags could be applied to coal mineral matter transformations, and the formation of ash, slags and deposits in large boilers.

There has also been a change of emphasis, says Jim Williamson, professor of materials chemistry at Imperial College, London."Certainly less steel will be required in the future," he says.
