,Registrations have increased by a considerable amount this year,, Jennie Williamson, an organizer of the event, said.Williamson said proceeds generated from the race will be used to make improvements to Williamson Park.,We,ll use the money to repair damaged boardwalks and for general maintenance,, she said.In addition to park improvements and upkeep, Williamson said, the run is an effort to promote the park.Last year, many of the participants who had never been to the park said they would visit it after seeing it during the run, she said. The park was given to the city in 1927 by Bright Williamson and his wife, Margaret. It,s a 64-acre tract that includes long-standing cypress trees and all the natural beauty found in a coastal plains swamp. The park also has bridges and paths that cross Swift Creek. The park, which also serves as a wildlife habitat, has a road that runs through it so drivers can peer down into its woodlands.Williamson, who also is the director of the Pee Dee Land Trust, is the great-great-niece of Bright Williamson and she lives a block from the park. She moved back to her home county of Darlington after living in Boston so she could promote conservation efforts in South Carolina.,I feel that Williamson Park is a treasure to the area.To have so much area available so close to the city of Darlington is rare,, she said. The run was initiated by Williamson,s brother, Carroll Williamson, in fall 2005 when more than 100 runners and walkers registered for the event.
