Jeff Williamson, a professor of horticulture at the University of Florida in Gainesville and editor of "The Blueberry News," agreed the winter played havoc with the normal growth cycle of the state's blueberry bushes.

Weather problems have not dampened the enthusiasm of blueberry growers, however. That's because blueberries return a good profit, if only during a brief time window.

Blueberry growers were also concerned about bloom damage, said Jeff Williamson, a University of Florida horticulturist and editor of a newsletter for the Florida Blueberry Growers' Association.

In the southern edge of the blueberry belt, which includes Polk County, flowers that have already opened would be particularly

vulnerable to freezing temperatures, Williamson said.

"Certainly, the forecast temperatures are low enough to give cause for concern," he said.

Like strawberry growers, blueberry farmers can provide limited protection from freezing temperatures by running their irrigation systems and coating the berries in ice.The reaction of water becoming ice releases heat that protects the berries.

Even the colder temperatures in those counties apparently have not damaged the young blueberry crop, which is harvested each April, said Jeff Williamson, a horticulture professor at the University of Florida and editor of the industry publication Blueberry News.

"So far, it's encouraging," Williamson said."I haven't gotten any reports of disasters or major losses."

But Williamson and others cautioned some crop damage may not surface until several days after a freeze.
