"The goal is taking what we've discovered outside the ivory towers and integrating it into the daily lives of residents in these retirement centers," said Dr. Jeff Williamson, an associate professor of internal medicine-geriatrics at Baptist. He also is the head of the section on gerontology and geriatric medicine.

Baptist is training wellness personnel with Senior Living Communities of Charlotte, the operator of Homestead Hills, and eight other retirement communities. The program will be offered at Homestead's clubhouse -- a major component of its recent $11 million expansion.

The program provides health assessments of Homestead residents, as well as dietary programs based on healthy weight management, and exercise regimens. The goal is getting participation from at least one-third of the 90 independent living residents, Senior Living officials said.

"We call what we're doing 'pre-habilitation' because our goal is to help senior citizens maintain their independence and live in their own homes through exercise and diet programs," Williamson said.

The preventative component is pivotal, Williamson said, because medical studies have shown that many people go through a major health crisis in their 70s.People who are in better shape tend to bounce back better.Studies also have shown that about 50 percent of the physical decline associated with aging can be prevented or delayed through physical activity.

"For example, many of the problems that the elderly experience are related to weight," Williamson said.
    ...
Johnson and Williamson said that the Senior Living communities are ideal settings for evaluating the effectiveness of the fitness program.
