Douglas Williamson of the FAO's forestry department says that there are increasing worries about the sustainability of this trade and that there is particular concern since larger species such as forest elephant and gorilla reproduce slowly and could be wiped out in areas where they are now intensively hunted.

"Implementing the principle of sustainable use is an elementary responsibility of the young generation", stressed Dr. Douglas Williamson from FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN.He said sustainability is threatened by man's alienation and indifference to nature and wildlife.Hence, these problems have to be taken seriously and need to be clearly defined."Partnerships between the concerned organizations, the UN-System included, are crucial to address this matter and to properly educate the youth", expressed Williamson.

Douglas Williamson is currently the Wildlife and Protected Area Management Officer at the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).Within the Forestry Department, he is responsible for the reactivation of the wildlife and protected areas programme, including design of biennial work plans for regular programme and project planning and funding.Prior to this, he was the Director of the King Khalid Wildlife Research Centre, National Commision for Wildlife Conservation and Development in Saudi Arabia.Dr. Williamson holds a PhD in Zoology for the University of Natal, South Africa.
