Dr. Douglas Harris Williamson (81), former Dean of Science at Saint Mary's, passed away peacefully in Halifax on June 28, 2005.
Born in Croydon, England, he served as a pilot in the RAF (1942-44) and then graduated with a B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Geology at the University of Aberdeen in 1952.
After a year with the Ontario Department of Mines, he took the position of Sir James Dunn Professor of Geology at Mount Allison University, where he established the Geology Department.He moved to Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario in 1966 and served as Dean of Science from 1969 to 1980.
In 1980 he came to Halifax to serve as Dean of Science and professor of Geology until 1989 when he became Emeritus Dean.
"At Saint Mary's, Dr. Williamson was highly respected among students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the University," says Dr. David Richardson, who is the current Dean of Science at Saint Mary's.

Dr. Richardson took the position as Assistant Professor of Biology at Laurentian University in 1969 and worked closely over the years with Dr. Williamson.

Dr. Williamson was a life member of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and loved his garden, music and art.
