He wanted the money to help buy a wheel chair for Yucalta Lodge because he was concerned about the seniors there being able to get around as they should," explained Diana Williamson, the Hospital Foundation's executive director."We were thrilled to be able to help him support the residents in Yucalta Lodge.A new wheel chair is there now thanks in no small part to his generous donation."
Although the foundation has raised funds for a wide range of equipment for the hospital and seniors' facilities over the years, "The need for new equipment is still great," says Williamson."Government funding is just not sufficient to provide us with the equipment and quality of care our communities want. The foundation works with groups and individuals to raise funds and support the Hospital and the two seniors' facilities."
Williamson provided two recent examples of the foundation's efforts. Two years ago the Foundation raised $80,000 for specialized equipment needed by a newly arrived obstetrician.
"The equipment allows the doctor to do procedures here in town that previously were only available in Victoria or Vancouver," she says."That has enhanced the health care women can receive here considerably. This year the foundation raised $30,000 for urology equipment which increases the care our new urologist can provide locally."
The Hospital Foundation provides support to community groups and businesses that raise money for the hospital in many ways, including golf tournaments and special promotions.
"Many of the service organizations in Campbell River have raised funds for the hospital, Yucalta and Sunshine Lodges," said Williamson.

Williamson insists that the need and the work of the foundation are as important as ever.

Williamson also pointed out that the Hospital Foundation is in complete control of the funds it raises and receives, and is completely independent of VIHA.
"Now and in future, the Foundation's funds will be used for what the donors want or as directed by the Foundation's Board based on suggestions from the hospital and the two Lodges," Williamson says.
