NEWPORT- After 33 years, the longest serving elected county official, Cocke County Property Assessor Delmar Williamson, has decided to retire and in doing so, presented his resignation to Cocke County Clerk Janice Butler on Monday.

"First of all, I would like to take this time to let you know how much I appreciate each and everyone of you in Cocke County," said Williamson."You have always been kind to me and helped me with my budget.I have always liked the community in which I live."
Williamson said he has tried to make a difference in the community by serving the public as Cocke County Property Assessor since he was first elected in 1984.
Williamson began working in the property assessor's office in 1971, after returning to Newport from his service in the Vietnam War.
"I have given it much thought and have made one of the big decisions in my life, which is to retire as of December 31, 2004," said Williamson."I will miss assisting everyone in the community, but I feel it's time for me to retire so that I can spend some time with my family."
Williamson has been married to his wife, Patricia for more than 25 years.

"I want to congratulate Delmar on his announcement of his retirement after 33 years of service in the Property Assessor's office," said Cocke County Mayor Iliff McMahan Jr. "Delmar is certainly one of the most talented, dedicated, and professional public servants I have ever known.He is a role model to me, and I feel Cocke County is very fortunate to have had the benefit of Delmar's work ethic and leadership."
McMahan said he feels extremely grateful to Williamson to have been able to work with him these past few years.

"I have worked with Delmar for the past 30 plus years," said Butler.

"Delmar is a person I will always be able to call my friend and the County Clerk's staff wish him all the best," said Butler.

Williamson was just re-elected in 2004 and he was scheduled to serve until 2008.
Williamson said the CLB will appoint Williamson's successor until the next election in 2006 and whoever wins the election will serve the remainder of Williamson's term.
Williamson said he would like to ask the Cocke County Legislative Body to appoint Margaret Sorrell, who is currently his assistant assessor, as the Cocke County Property Assessor until the election in 2006."She has 25 years of experience in this office," said Williamson."Ms.
