    Williamson is new City boss

    By WoodyMonday 14th May 2007

Chester City have appointed Bobby Williamson as their new manager.

Williamson succeeds Mark Wright who was sacked last month following a disappointing League Two campaign.
    ...
City chairman Stephen Vaughan explained to Sky Sports News why Williamson was the standout candidate to take the reins at The Saunders Honda Stadium.
    ...
Williamson made his name as a manager at SPL sides Kilmarnock and Hibernian before moving south and taking the reins at Championship-bound Plymouth - the club he left at the start of last season.

The appointment will disappoint Livingston, who were running the rule over Williamson as a possible replacement for the axed John Robertson at Almondvale.
    ...
Meanwhile Rangers coach Malcolm Thompson will join Williamson as assistant manager, the future of youth team boss Simon Davies is not known at the minute.
    ...
Born in Glasgow in 1961, Williamson signed professioanal forms with Clydebank as a youngster, netting 35 goals over two season. The sort of form which brought about a move to Rangers.

Sadly his time at Ibrox was hit by injury and unable to gain regular first team football, he moved to West Brom and then Rotherham with varied success before returning north of the border with Kilmarnock.

After retiring from the game Williamson took over the managerial reigns with Killie, guiding them to Scottish Cup success in his first season and regular European qualification over his five year reign before the call came to take over at Hibs.

Although the league positions at Easter Road were nothing startling, Williamson did lift Hibs from a relegation threatened side to a midtable one even knocking out Celtic and Rangers in the Scottish League Cup before losing to Livingston in the final. It was his talent for bringing through young talent that really saw him shine though.

With his reputation soaring, the call from England came once again. This time the shape of then League One side Plymouth Argyle. With Paul Sturrock having guided the Greens to the top of the table before leaving for Southampton, Williamson won his first game in charge to secure the title.
    ...
Williamson stabilised the Greens in their first year back in the second flight and although a poor end of season run saw them finish just three points above the drop zone, they were never in real danger.
    ...
Since his departure from the Devon club in September 2005, Williamson has been involved with coaching and developing the young Scottish stars in the Under 18 and 19 set-ups north of the border before the call came to take over at the Saunders Honda Stadium.

City manager Bobby Williamson was forced into another change as Lowndes was forced from the field to be replaced by young winger Paul McManus.
    ...
With Tuesday's injured duo missing manager Bobby Williamson brought in Tony Grant and Nathan Lowndes while Simon Yeo started ahead of Chris Holroyd.
    ...
Paul McManus replaced Lowndes and Paul Rutherford came on for Grant as manager Bobby Williamson looked to change things.
    ...
But it was another reasonable performance from Bobby Williamson's men, and they were unlucky not to leave Yorkshire without a point for their efforts.

I am calling on the support of everyone," Williamson said.

    So who is Bobby Williamson?

Bobby Williamson was born in 1961 in Glasgow, Scotland. His playing career commenced at Clydebank where he scored 35 goals over an 85 game spell.

Williamson @ RangersHe obviously impressed as a move to the SPL beckoned when he joined Glasgow Rangers.Sadly, he was blighted with injury however and he moved south of the border to pursue a career in the English game.

Spells followed at West Bromwich Albion and at Rotherham United, indeed Bobby was part of the Rotherham United squad that faced Chester City on the 28th April 1990.

This was CIty's last game at The Stadium, Sealand Road,Eventually Williamson moved back to Scotland and to Kilmarnock where he was to play his last game of competitive football.

In 1997, Williamson became manager of Kilmarnock and had near instant success by lifting the Scottish Cup in his first season at the club.

    European experience

Williamson also guided 'The Knock' to compete in Europe. He regularly qualified for continental competition during his time at Kilmarnock, reaching the top four in the Scottish Premier League four years out of six.

Bobby has managed some household names in Scotland including former Scotland internationals, Ally McCoist and Ian Durrant.
    ...
Williamson has a long association with Kilmarnock but he eventually moved on to Hibernian in February 2002.

It was at Hibs that he developed several youth players, Hibs built up quite a reputation under Williamson for nurturing young talent and at the conclusion of the 2003/4 season he led out a youthful Hibernian team to face Livingston.

Whilst they lost 2-0 on the day having knocked out Celtic and Rangers, it is a credit to Williamson that he put his faith in his younger players. In April 2004, Bobby moved south again. He joined Plymouth Argyle.

He won his first game in charge at Home Park, a special game for the Pilgrims as this secured promotion to from Football League One.His spell at Argyle ended in September 2005.Of late,

Williamson has been involved in the Scotland 'B' and under 19's set up.Williamson has penned a two year deal that will see him at City until May 2009.

CHESTER City boss Bobby Williamson today reflected on his team's latest setback. The Chester manager watched as his side suffered a 1-0 home league defeat against second bottom Mansfield Town.

City have now gone five league games without a win and their hopes of claiming a play-off place are fading.

Williamson said: "It was a disappointing result because we knew exactly how they (Mansfield) would go about their business - and that's exactly what they've done.
    ...
Williamson admitted he would be looking at the way in which Mansfield snatched maximum points from the contest, and added: "It was a poor goal to concede by any stretch of the imagination, and any way you want to look at it.

"I will be analysing the goal and I'll be looking at ways we will be able to learn from it, but it was a disappointing goal."

And reflecting on Chester's poor run of form which has seen the club only pocket one point from their last five games, Williamson added: "I was slightly concerne

A delighted manager Bobby Williamson said after the win: "It will take a while for us to enjoy it, it is a great three points in what was always going to be a difficult game and it seemed that way when we lost a goal just on half time, well just after half time as far as I was concerned as two minutes were added on.We said to the guys, that wasn't a goal in it, there was nothing separating the teams and if we went out and applied ourselves and looked out for each other we would get a result and is exactly what they did."

He continued: "They have worked really hard for each other and we have got the breaks, the penalty decision was a great shout for us and it has been long overdue, as I have been saying, we needed a break and we got that today."
