    Bob Williamson became Professor of Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry at St Mary's Hospital Medical School, University of London, in 1976, where he remained until 1995 when he moved to Melbourne as Director of the Murdoch Institute and Professor of Medical Genetics.He retired in October 2004, and now is an Honorary Senior Principal Fellow of the Murdoch Institute and the University of Melbourne.Bob was involved in the identification of genes for cystic fibrosis, craniofacial abnormalities, heart disease and Alzheimer disease.More recently he has taken a major interest in national science policy and medical and scientific ethics.He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (where he chairs the National Committee for Medicine), a Fellow of the Royal Society, and an Officer of the Order of Australia.

    Biography

    Professor Robert Williamson received a BE (Electrical Engineering) from the Queensland University of Technology in 1984 and a Masters of Engineering Science (Electrical Engineering) from the University of Queensland in 1986.In 1990 he obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Queensland.He joined the Australian National University as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Systems Engineering in 1990 and held a series of appointments before becoming a professor in the Department of Telecommunications Engineering, Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering.

    From 2003 to early 2006 Professor Williamson was the Director of NICTA's Canberra research laboratory.He is currently in the role of Scientific Director for NICTA.Professor Williamson is Vice President of the Association for Computational Learning Theory and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Machine Learning Research.He is an advisory board member of the Australian Communications Research Network and a director of Epicorp.He was a member of the Mathematics, Information and Communications Sciences Publications Advisory Panel from 2002 to 2004.

    His scientific interests include signal processing and machine learning.

    Born in the USA, Professor Williamson studied at University in London and was appointed professor of Genetics at St Mary's Hospital Medical School in 1976.

    He has also worked at Johns Hopkins in New York and Institut Pasteur in Paris.

    The Wellcome Medal of Biochemical Society and the King Faisal Gold Medal for Medical Research are among the many awards he has received.

    In 1995 Professor Williamson moved to Australia and became the Director of the Murdoch Institute for Research into Birth Defects, and in 2000 moved into his current position.
