Citing longer sales cycles and the need to conserve cash , WebCriteria CEO Alistair Williamson said that the company has reduced its 83-person work force by 15 people , or 18 percent.
It's difficult , but that doesn't mean it's not the right decision , said Williamson.
Positions were eliminated throughout the WebCriteria organization , reflecting the fact that the company had hired more people last year to meet anticipated growth in sales.
Where some technology companies were beginning to feel the pinch of the changing economy in the fourth quarter of last year , WebCriteria was meeting all sales targets and expecting more of the same for this year.In December , the company raised $ 12.5 million in its second round of venture funding.
Now that WebCriteria is seeing a slowdown in sales , we must give ourselves the same opportunity for success that we had last quarter , said Williamson. We've got to be a little leaner now , just as our customers are doing..
WebCriteria chose to make the staffing cuts now , Williamson said , while there is still sufficient cash to continue running the business and delivering new products and services to a nationwide customer roster that includes Fortune 500 companies such as American Express , New York Life and Dell Computer.Employees who have been laid off will receive four weeks' severance pay.We want to treat well the people who have worked so hard and with so much passion for this company , Williamson said.
Founded in 1998 , WebCriteria assesses the customer experience of web sites , providing answers to why sites succeed or fail , and what companies can do to improve return on investment in their web sites.
Even in the cooler economic climate , Williamson said , WebCriteria has something important to offer. The advantage we have is that , as companies are thinking more carefully about their web investments , they are asking who can help them understand what people are doing on their site , and if they are not doing what we want them to , why not? WebCriteria can help companies answer those questions , Williamson said.
