"I wanted to really be a part of helping tell the story that this slight millage rate increase is to sustain the service level that we require and to pay for things like automation and maintaining the aging infrastructure," Williams said."That was an educational process for me to understand how we got to the position we are in."
Williams brings a decade of experience to his new position.Prior to joining the city, he worked as assistant to the county manager for Broward County where he was responsible for overseeing a budget of $2.5 billion, the supervision of 7,000 employees and assisting in the administration of the state's second largest county with 1.7 million residents.
While there, he was county liaison to a number of departments. His tenure at Broward County began in 1994 when he joined Emergency Management.
In his new position as assistant city manager, Williams is looking forward to learning from his colleagues, as most have been with the city for many years.
"Couple that with a fresh perspective, a new set of eyes.I think the combination of the two can really serve the agency well," Williams said.
A native of Southern California, Williams grew up with a sense of service and always knew he wanted to work in the public sector. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a master's in Public Administration, both from California State University.
"I grew up in a household where doing good and public service was something that you kind of inherited.I've always enjoyed bringing diverse groups and diverse interests together, and setting forth a plan of action that we could work together to achieve," Williams said.He lives in Coral Springs with his wife, Carol, and two daughters, Mallory and Danielle, and is pursuing a doctorate in Public Administration at Florida Atlantic University.
"I've always set my sights on becoming a city or county administrator, so my whole professional track has been [geared] toward that," he added.
