Prune needless costs for long-term growth

,,On August 28, I realised we were heading into a recession.
The writing was on the wall,'' says Sharon Williams, founder and managing director of public relations company, Taurus Marketing.
,,HR and marketing are the first things to go, though they shouldn't be.'' Williams called in the experts, something she had never done in 13 years of being in business. ,,When you are running a successful business, it's hard to find people who know more than you.'' But she needed someone who could remove the emotion and take an aggressive look at the figures.
Mike McGrath from Streamwise, a company specialising in providing businesses with growth strategies, confirmed Williams had as strong business but she would need to batten down for the hard times ahead.
His advice was to cut discretionary costs and act quickly to avoid ,,death by a thousand cuts''.
Together, Williams and her team made a plan that included slashing costs by 30 percent. ,,People need to know what's going on and share the journey,'' she says. ,,We poured our business through a sieve.
