Staging themed events is a necessary and deliberate policy to draw in more visitors in a competitive market, according to company secretary and director Vicky Turner.
"Times have changed since the 1960s and 1970s, when people didn't have so much choice in how they spent their spare time.We used to get hordes of visitors coming to the Hope Valley by train before so many people had cars," she said."Since then the leisure industry has grown and there is so much competition that we have to constantly look at new ways to draw in customers.We can't just be a show cave any more."

For more than three years, Vicky has been working closely with Glossop-based business adviser Deborah Cowsill, putting all areas of the business under the microscope to boost its competitiveness and ensure future success.

First on the agenda for Vicky was a PACE management course for the small business director, at Manchester Business School.This enabled Vicky to take on a more strategic role and bring in organisational, structural and management changes to promote business growth.
Deborah has helped to review and implement marketing strategies, secured a small grant towards the cost of upgrading the cavern's website and assisted Vicky in putting together a successful application for a £15,000 Government grant to help the business recover from the adverse impact of foot and mouth.

"Since we became involved with Business Link, we have been much more proactive, setting up systems to help the business run more efficiently and effectively and putting us in a better position to tackle the challenges of the future," said Vicky.
