Kettering Wellness Center Director Deborah Williams-Roberts said requiring students to have the vaccination would cause supply and demand problems for most schools.
There's been a shortage recently - problems with the vaccination being unavailable , Williams-Roberts said. We've strongly recommended students get the vaccination and had numerous freshmen requests for it.We're only able to distribute it in bulks of 10.The shelf life is only 10 days and it's expensive. That creates a problem if you don't have the demand..
Each shot costs about $70 and must be ordered in advance , compared to doctors fees that go as high as $150.

Williams-Roberts said even some health departments have steered students and parents to the school for the shot when they were in short supply.
We need to be careful setting ourselves up to require something we can't guarantee , she said.
Baker College has also opted not to require the vaccination for its freshmen students. Its dormitory houses about 180 students.
...
Williams-Roberts said that gives further weight to the argument against requiring the vaccination at this time.
Of concern are the Kettering students who live off campus in fraternity houses or private apartments and rental houses surrounding the west Flint campus - areas that can not be controlled by the university as well as the residence halls.
Given how the virus is contracted you have just as high incident of upper class students who go to parties and live in fraternity houses and have same level of contact freshmen do , she said. There's no indication that upperclassmen were building a resistance. We were concerned with them being given false notion that they may not be at risk , and not taking precautions..
So far 12 students at Kettering have requested and received the vaccination.Four are pending.
...
We've had a number of phone calls for students coming in October and we're encouraging them to get one before they get here , Williams-Roberts said.
