• William L. Wilkoff, FASID, was selected the 1998 Design for Humanity recipient.The Design for Humanity award honors an individual or institution for significant contributions to improve the quality of the human environment through design-related activities.Wilkoff is being recognized for his long-time service to the disabled.
An industrial/interior designer, Wilkoff is a principal of District Design in Washington, DC.Founded in 1969, his barrier-free consulting company specializes in surveys and presentations for the civil rights mandate, The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).Since 1991, District Design has surveyed more than 13 million square feet of commercial space for ADA compliance.
Wilkoff, an author and ADA lecturer, is a member of The President's Committee of Employment of People with Disabilities.He represents ASID on the ANSI A117.1 Committee and the ADAAG Review Board.After more than two years of deliberations, the committee and review board have restructured their standards to make them more usable for designers and code officials.His 47-year career spans corporate and retail space with emphasis on barrier-free design.He attended Ohio State University and earned a Bachelor of Industrial Design Degree from Pratt Institute.
His partial list of design and ADA compliance survey projects include the National Academy of Sciences, National Institutes of Health, Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., Reston Town Office Center, The American University, The Catholic University of America, The Oliver Carr Co., Navy Federal Credit Union, U.S. Sprint, Ford Motor Co., Washington Harbour-Georgetown and Watergate-Les Champs.
