On Thursday 22nd November, Dr. Lorraine Wild from Oxford University came to speak to year 11 pupils at Farnborough Hill as part of the Think Tank Initiative.Pupils from local schools Salesian College, The Wavell School and Cove School also attended the talk.Dr. Wild is the Academic Officer at the School of Geography in Oxford, and her particular interests are in regional planning policies of the European Union and rural issues in the UK.She is involved in interviewing and selection year 13 pupils for the undergraduate Geography course, and it was in this capacity that she came to speak to the year 11 pupils.
Dr. Wild spoke about the purpose of University, emphasizing that it is usually to train and expand the mind, rather than to train for a particular career. She used case studies of different undergraduates, who had all studied the same degree, but who had gone on to very different careers.Dr. Wild then persuaded the year 11s that it is important that they start considering university courses during their GSCE year, as it may influence some of the their A Level and work experience choices. Finally, Dr. Wild spoke about life at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, explaining that they are looking for many of the same characteristics as other top universities.
Many pupils used the opportunity to ask Dr Wild a wide range of questions after the talk, and there was a chance for students from different schools to mingle over hot chocolate and biscuits.
