Justin Wild, asset protection manager for Target, said his company has been hosting the HEAT events with the Mesa police since February.
"We want our guests to have the opportunity to take a proactive approach toward auto theft," Mr. Wild said."We don't like it when vehicles are broken into or stolen that are on our property.
Mr. Wild has been in his position for two years. He said auto theft is not common in the shopping plaza, but it does occur.
"We had a vehicle stolen two months ago," Mr. Wild said."Before that, I can't remember. Some of our other stores in the Valley have cars stolen much more frequently."
Mr. Wild said Target has cameras outside and inside its facility, including some focused on the parking lot.
"We like to know what's going here at all times, inside and the outside," he said.
