    ...
Because of her dedication to the program and particularly her commitment to her patients, Julie is the latest to be named GVH Hero.

Julie has been the service coordinator of the New Vision program since its initiation at GVH approximately eighteen months ago.New Vision is a cooperative effort between the SpecialCare Hospital Management Corporation and Guadalupe Valley Hospital, which provide medical stabilization services for voluntary adults who need to be medically withdrawn from alcohol and other drugs. The program provides an in-hospital stay, referrals to treatment outside the hospital after completion of the detoxification program, and an alumni program for patients and their families.

"Detox is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a fulfilling life of sobriety," comments Julie."Chemical addiction and dependency is chronic: but it can be arrested. The New Vision program helps patients do just that."

Julie has been in the field of substance abuse treatment for the past fifteen years. She attended Saint Mary's University's Chemical Dependency Program and is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor.Additionally, she is a Nationally Certified Addiction Counselor and has been recognized as having completed more than 25,000 hours in chemical dependency counseling. She is also a student at Southwest Texas University in San Marcos.

"Although Julie has not been with GVH for a long period of time, she is committed to the New Vision Program," comments Fay Bennett, Director of Personnel at the hospital."The New Vision Program would not be what it is today without her."

A native Texan, Julie has spent most of her life in San Antonio. She is proud of her two children, her daughter-in-law, and her two grandchildren, Brody and Hannah, who live in the area.Julie's hobbies include designing and making stained glass; socializing with friends, and taking long walks."I love to read, and I particularly enjoy spiritual literature," she adds."And, I am an avid Spurs fan."She also enjoys hanging out with her grandchildren.

Julie also loves living in Seguin."I love the small-town atmosphere in Seguin," Julie comments."The people are friendly and I am making Seguin my home."

"Julie says a lot for Seguin," says Laura Allison, an Intake Coordinator with the New Vision program."The fact that Julie just bought a home here only underscores her commitment to participate in the community."

"And I really enjoy working at the hospital," Julie adds.
