In her previous career as a television journalist, Terry White put pieces of information together.Today, as the owner of Peace by Piece Mosaics, it's broken pieces of china.

Art calls out to its creator in different ways. For Terry White of Shorewood, the owner of Peace by Piece Mosaics, the craft cried out while her son played soccer in the house."My son would kick the ball in our home and ultimately break something," White says."Instead of getting upset, I decided to put the item back together in a mosaic form."

White says in life there are many broken things and it's how we adapt to the breakage that's important."The learning comes from how we decide we're going to deal with broken items," she says.By her own estimation, White is engaged in several careers simultaneously."I do voice-over work for radio commercials, on camera work for training and industrial films, faux finishes and mosaic instruction and artwork.

"I like the fact I learn something different with everything I do," White says.Even though she doesn't consider herself an artist in the traditional sense, a large amount of creativity goes into what she does.White worked as a local television reporter and anchor on Fox 6 in the 1980s.

"I don't care what it's called, I like something if it's attractive," White explains."I don't need to cling to the word ‘art.' I put the pieces together. In my previous career as a television journalist I was required to put pieces of information together; today it's broken pieces of china."

White is an instructor in the craft and conducts classes in mosaic, including classes at the Cedarburg Cultural Center."Recently, we've made a lot of Christmas ornaments, we do radiator covers, fireplace surrounds, and I've done entire basement floors."

She is a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists and is very active in promoting the craft locally.

White gets jolted , has to write.

    ...
CAMBRIDGE - With nine books on the Internet , all for an older audience , Terri White didn't plan to write a children's book - but she did , calling it , Glinda's Crystal Garden..

Though she had previously put together a Christmas story for young readers , I never thought I'd do a children's book , she said.

But that's what inspiration is all about- an artist never knows when it will hit her.

I get these jolts , Ms. White said. The next time I go to the computer , the whole thing's there..

This time , the story was inspired by one of Ms. White's favorite characters , Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz..The book's message is one of affirmation for young girls.Little girls should love themselves , Ms. White said.

    ...
She did a fantastic job , Ms. White said.

Though she has completed a number of novels , fiction is not the only genre Ms. White has worked in.A former reporter for The Daily Banner , she said , I think working at a newspaper is the best training a writer can have , with journalism's emphasis on clarity and getting to the point.

Still , expressing original ideas and beliefs is what keeps her writing now. It's my calling , it's what I'm supposed to do , she said. Then , hinting at the spiritual aspect of her work , she added , I think a lot of this comes through me - I don't think I'm the source of this..

Ms. White will travel to Skidmore College in New York this month to teach at the International Women's Writing Guild Summer Conference. Her topic will be , The Bard as Storyteller..
