The district received more than $5 million in funding the past three years, according to KUSD Finance Director Terry White.But that ends June 30.

"We didn't get the growth we'd anticipated, either," Ford said, referring to state funding that is based on enrollment."We were expecting about $700,000 more in base support."

The number of students in the district this year rose from last year, but not by as much as was expected, White said.

"At this time last year, we had anticipated 5 percent growth for this fiscal year," he said.

"But actual growth was about 1 percent," White said.

But Terry White, the district's director of transportation, says the slow-fill pumps will be even better in managing staff time.

"It's cheaper parking the bus, plugging it in and then coming back in the morning when it's filled up," he says.

The district also is looking to other natural-gas vehicles owned by other government agencies as potential customers at the new pumping station.
