    Ray White is a biologist specializing in stream habitat restoration for trout and salmon.He earned BA, MS and PhD degrees in zoology from the University of Wisconsin, worked as a State of Wisconsin biologist, and taught at several universities.Retired from Montana State University, he and his wife live in Edmonds.He now serves as a consultant on fishery issues in North America and Europe.Long an avid birder, hunter, and angler, he recently concentrated on bird photography, and travels worldwide to pursue it.His photos are sold in the Seattle area and have been featured in several publications.

    Dr. Ray White to Present Trout Unlimited Program April 14Internationally known biologist and stream rehabilitator Dr. Ray White of Edmonds, Washington will present a program on "The restoration Of Stream Habitats In England, Ireland, and Germany" at the Fin 'N Feather, in Winneconne, on April 14.Dr. White's program is based on his observations gathered during time spent in these countries last fall as part of an international workshop on stream habitat management.This is a free program, open to the public, sponsored by Central Wisconsin Trout Unlimited, it will be held in the upper level of the restaurant, and will begin at 7:30 p.m.Lee Stroncek, professional wildlife artist from Bozeman, Montana, a long time friend of Dr. White will also be in attendance and has agreed to speak at the presentation.

    Dr. White began his professional career as a trout research biologist with the Wisconsin DNR in the late 1950's.He co-authored a DNR bulletin in 1967 titled "Guidelines For Management Of Trout Stream Habitat In Wisconsin".This publication quickly became the foundational guide for developing and managing Wisconsin trout streams---which have become recognized as the best managed streams in the world.The Wisconsin management system has brought many fisheries managers to Wisconsin to see "how we do it." After earning his Ph. D from the University of Wisconsin, Dr. White moved on to an academic career as a professor of fisheries science at Michigan State University and then at Montana State University.He continued his personal research studies of trout streams as well as supervising studies of graduate students.He is now in the business of trout stream management consulting.

He was a instructor at the institute of Hydrobiology and Fishery Science for the University of Hamburg in W Germany.He became an Associate Professor of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University and in 1990 retired as an Associate Professor of Fisheries science at Montana State University.DR White presently has a private consulting firm, Trout Habitat Specialists located at Redmond , Washington.Ray J White is a consultant whose time , service and advice continue to guide fishery conservation groups and international agencies.Dr White is a long time advisor to Trout Unlimited and many other organizations including the Yakima river Alliance and the FFF Steelhead committee. ray is a member of a broad range of panels committees and boards.He is a presented papers and gave keynote talks to national and international meetings as well as authoring articles for books and journals.His publication, Guide lines for Trout Stream Management in Wisconsin (1967) remains a classic reference.Ray's graduate students have never forgotten the standards of honesty and excellence that he set.He encouraged students to explore related fields and blend these disciplines in their work.In the early 1990's Ray wrote a series of articles on Why Wild Fish Matter, that highlights the superiority of wild trout over genetically deficient domestic strains.The irrefutable articles significantly altered salmonid management.Ray White has had and important impact on trout research and management for some 50 years and is well deserving of the WT VIII 2004 A.
