"If we would have played like this for the last five or six games who knows," said Golden Valley head coach Mike White."We're capable of playing like this.Part of it was the girls were pumped up for the Merced rivalry. They always get up for each other."

The Bears (5-7-5 CCC) had their opportunities to end the Cougars playoff hopes with some open looks at the net in the first half.

    ...
"It's coming down to the last game," said White."We have a slim hope of still making the playoffs.I wish we could play (Johansen) again to decide who goes to the playoffs, but we don't."

"It's not up to us anymore," said Golden Valley coach Mike White." We have to win both of our games, and Johansen has to either tie or lose one of their final two games. It's awful that we had it 8-1-1 at one point and now it's 9-5-2.I don't know what it is.We got in a slump and the confidence isn't there to get out of it, I guess."

    ...
"We had plenty of opportunities," White said."We had a couple of breakaways, but ... it's just been that way."

The Cougars close out the CCC schedule with games next week against Merced on Monday and Downey on Wednesday. The Vikings face Downey on Monday and Turlock on Wednesday.

"Some of our shots just weren't smart shots," said Golden Valley coach Mike White."If we'd taken a little more time, taken that one extra pass, it could have resulted in us scoring a goal.We were in that panicking mode where we would shoot too soon."

The Cougars face Turlock on Thursday then take on Beyer next Tuesday.

"After (today's game with Atwater) we had a nice little talk," White said."I'm thinking we can take a lot of frustration out on Turlock then focus on Beyer."

The game was in question until Wednesday afternoon, when White turned the decision over to his team.In a near-unanimous vote, the Cougars decided to play.

"It's a victory, but it was hard to play soccer because of what happened," said Golden Valley coach Mike White."The decision to play the game wasn't an easy one."

Neither squad was able to generate much offense throughout the contest, with the only goal coming 12 minutes into the first half, and even that score just barely found its way into the net.
