The 51-year-old woman and 11-year-old girl were sleeping at the home, 303 14th St., Port Huron, when they awoke to the sound of smoke detectors, said Capt. Mark White.
The woman came down the stairs from the second floor, where she was sleeping, spotted the fire on the stovetop and ran out the front door with her daughter, he said.
The cause of the fire is attributed to a pan of grease left on the stove, White said.
The woman says she turned off the heat after making fried chicken late at night. The woman has many cats, and it's possible that one of them ignited the electric burners, which are easy to turn on and off, White said.
The girl received two smoke detectors at Harrison Elementary a few years ago from the Port Huron Fire Department.
The mother had just replaced the batteries within the day, White said.
The mother and daughter will stay with family, he said. The house is extensively damaged.
