Mark White, a former teacher, knows a thing or two about the issues small businesses face, especially as they try to find their niche in local markets.
As co-owner of Grand Events and Party Rentals in Memphis, a company he and his brother started about 15 years ago, White helped the store move away from its early days as a general rental store to find its niche as a one-stop shop for special event rental needs in the area. And as chairman of the Memphis Area Action Council of the National Federation of Independent Business, he helps other small business owners by staying abreast of issues that affect them all.
The economy really rises and falls based on the health of small businesses, he said, adding that most people dont realize the majority of businesses in the country are small businesses.
Regional clientele.Grand Events and Party Rentals, which operates a 120,000-square-foot facility, works primarily in the Memphis and Shelby County market, though White said the company reaches just outside the perimeter of the region.
And due to his efforts to target the special event rental market, Whites services are sought by a number of local groups, such as Memphis Botanic Garden in putting on its summer concert series. In addition, Grand Events and Party Rentals handled the tent work and booth and table setup for the Southern Festival of Books held Downtown last week. The setup effort alone at the festival was a big task, with the company putting up more than 1,000 feet of tents.
White was unfazed by the challenge, though.

The best thing about this is every days a new day, White said.
...
Stan White worked in the construction rental business, and Mark White was a teacher at Harding Academy.
...
We started out as a general rental store at the time, and around 1994, we realized our niche in the Memphis market was special event rentals, White said.
...
Were very heavy into tent rentals, White said.We do weddings, or well go into someones yard and do a $50,000 decorated tent event with chandeliers, air conditioning, the whole nine yards it just depends on what they want.
Variety of customers.White is proud of the fact that his business is a preferred vendor with the newly opened FedExForum. The company also does work for the FedEx-St.Jude Classic golf tournament, as well as Target House.
And the company doesnt work solely with corporate clients.
Well go and put up a tent in someones back yard if they just want to have a barbecue, White said.
And in addition to his work creating happy moments for his rental customers, White works to do the same for local small businesses as chairman of the Memphis Area Action Council, a position hes held for more than a year.
Helping small business.
...
The group stays abreast of legislation coming out of Nashville or Washington, D.C., and makes others aware of it, White said, adding that the MAACs efforts are about helping small businesses have the tools they need to be successful and grow.
For now, White is confident that Grand Events and Party Rentals will continue to grow, and part of its growth could be due to Whites attention to customer service.
