Katy White, the principal at Bellview Elementary in Rogers, said two of her grandchildren attend Elm Tree.White said she is "jealous" every time either one of her grandchildren lets her know they have the week off.

"I would love to have that schedule," White said."Businesses don't want all of their employees taking off at the same time, and this schedule would help schools and businesses take advantage of that.You just want to do whatever is the best for the kids."

In Fayetteville, Happy Hollow Elementary also uses a continuous-learning calendar.Pupils attend class the same number of days as other schools in the district but are off for a week at a time between grading periods.The lost days are made up by extending class for a month longer than the other schools in the summer.

ROGERS -- Judith Carmical, Denny Higgins and Katy White began their teaching careers in the Rogers School District within a few years of each other.

White, 55, is principal at Bellview and is the "baby of the group."White has taught 27 years in Rogers, the last 14 as a principal.She plans to start a second career upon retiring as the manager of a local nutrition and supplement store.

"And, to talk about our grandchildren," White said with a smile.

Bellview Principal Katy White agreed the problem decreases as the year goes along, even for elementary schools.

The number of parents driving may not decline much for her school this year, but the system for getting each child delivered to the waiting bus, car or sidewalk in a fast and safe manner improves as everyone learns the system.

"Our problem right now is that we went from less than 400 students last year to 522 students this year," White said."But, every day, it's just getting smoother and smoother."

Judith Carmical of Bonnie Grimes Elementary School and Katy White of Bellview Elementary School will be retiring at the end of the school year.
