"Today is the culmination of everything I've worked for, and it feels great."-- Jennifer White
The last time she wore her gold cuff links, she graduated from nursing school in Belleville in 1966.
But yesterday, Jennifer White donned the gold cuffs again -- this time with a distinguished black robe and white tie.
White, 58, was the eldest of 83 new lawyers called to the Ontario bar in London yesterday in a ceremony at the London Convention Centre.
...
White, who is described by her daughter Vanessa, 23, as a "driven, hard-working woman," applied to the law schools at three universities.
But the friendly, approachable nature of Western staff encouraged her to choose it for her degree.
Two of her children -- Vanessa and Ian, 31 -- were also starting at Western in the fall of 2000, making a higher education a family affair.
After completing her law degree in 2003, White went on to article at Lerner and Associates.
She said her schooling combined with her training at Lerner helped get her hired at Toronto-based Miller-Thompson, where she starts a career on Aug. 3.
"She's going to be making six figures," daughter Vanessa whispered yesterday."She wouldn't tell you that, though."
White said her life experience -- much lengthier than most of her schoolmates -- also helped her secure a job.
As well, her background in the medical field is particularly valuable to the health law she will be practising.
White, whose husband, children and grandchildren were on hand yesterday to cheer her on, said she owes her success to her family.
"They're amazing.I couldn't have done it without them."
