Sheffield24- South Yorkshire Fire Service calls time... - [Cached Version]

Jim White, Station Officer at Community Fire Safety Support in Sheffield, said the Fire Service is actively working to bring the figures down - and they appear to be succeeding.

"The figures have dropped by 26% over the past three years, from 2,875 between 2001-2002 to 2,109 this last year.We have implemented new initiatives over this period, and these are really working," he said.

One of the most effective initiatives is 'Call Challenge'.If an operator suspects a call to be a hoax, they will ask the caller whether they do indeed need the service.

"It's just a simple, calm question, but when our operators think the person may a hoaxer, more often than not the caller will either change their minds or hang up.

"Our operators are very well trained and experienced - they can usually tell when something is not right," said Officer White.
