The Slammers open against the San Jose Ballers on Saturday at Merritt College, and owner Ivan White has high expectations for the team and the league.

"We hope to fill the place up," White said of the 850-seat Merritt College gym, where tickets will cost $12 for adults, and $5 for kids 12-and-under.

"Most leagues try to emulate what the NBA is doing," White said, referring to the practice of constant travel throughout the country."Unless you have deep pockets, that system ends up failing."

White is the founder and CEO of Medelex, Inc., a medical and industrial diagnostic imaging company in Sunnyvale.According to the San Francisco Business Times, White heads a group of investors that paid $90,000 to own the team.

"Here you have local teams, and you play a lot of local games.That builds up a local fan base," White added.

The second part of the formula is to speed up the pace of the game, which the league hopes to do by incorporating an "immediate inbounds" rule to eliminate dead balls, giving each team only two timeouts per half and using a 22-second shot clock.

"It's a proven model for hockey or football, as you can see in the Arena Football League, how it's taken off," White said."There are all these other models that have been successful.And nobody has ever done it with basketball."

While White did not want to discuss players' salaries, he was clear that it was not enough to subsist on.

"We always tell the guys, 'If you are working a day job, keep it,'" White said.
