According to Williamsburg Fire Department Captain Chuck White, the fire started in a fenced-in area outside where the Bistro stored used linen napkins before they are picked up by a laundry service.

"The Bistro uses an outside laundry company for their linens," White said.
    ...
White said that investigators had spoken to a witness Thursday morning who claimed to have seen people smoking cigarettes in the area before the buildings were evacuated, presumably the same witness who spoke with The Flat Hat Wednesday.

"The witness had spoken with the press, but not with the investigators until this morning," White said.

According to White, all three properties, which also included the Peanut Shop, were occupied at the time of the blaze, although the majority of people inside were staff."They made a quick attempt at extinguishing the flames and then bailed out," White said.He also confirmed that there were no injuries during the fire.

A Blue Talon employee confirmed that the fire had started outside.Employees of Baskin-Robbins, where the structural damage appears to be much more extensive, declined to comment.

While precise figures of the damage caused are still unavailable, White said that he had heard some estimates of over one million dollars."We're still trying to get estimates from insurance adjusters," he said.p. Large sections of North Boundary and Prince George St. were blocked off throughout the morning.

    Captain Chuck White

As with all captains, Chuck and his Wife Suzanne bring to the Oyster Catcher their share of sea stories. (But we'll let them keep them for the charters.)

Chuck White has been sailing for over 30 years. He is the former Captain of Little Jenny an 85-foot Bug Eye Ketch, built in Solomons Island, Maryland in the late 1890's.He holds a 100-Ton Masters license with sailing and towing endorsements. For 8 years, he and his wife Suzanne lived aboard their sailboat, Ronin, cruising the East Coast, ICW and Caribbean.

As a cadet at the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina he developed an interest in the Civil War."While attending the Citadel I became fascinated with the Civil War.Over the course of the next thirty years I tried to visit most of the major battlefields from Gettysburg to Charleston. When I found out that Robert and Dana wished to take "Oyster Catcher" to these areas it was a dream come true.I could not have imagined a more perfect job or lifestyle."Chuck is a decorated Veteran of the Vietnam War where he served in Special Forces and as a rifle platoon leader and Commander of the Long Range Recon Patrol.Chuck has made numerous boat deliveries from St. John, Nova Scotia to Florida and out into the Caribbean. He has also enjoyed his fair share of ocean racing having navigated the Bermuda race more than once with a sextant.Chuck has authored a manual on celestial navigation and taught the subject at The Captains School Of Long Island.Chuck is a certified diver, holds a black belt in karate and in his spare time practiced law as a defense attorney.

    ...
It could be said when Suzanne fell in love with Chuck - she fell in love with the sea."Prior to meeting "El Captain," life at sea was not even a glimmer on the outer edges of my imagination."That changed quickly as she and Chuck spent eight of the last ten years on board their vessel, Ronin.

Smoking rail car intercepted - [Cached Version]
Published on: 9/9/2006    Last Visited: 9/9/2006

"The call was that we had a rail car that was carrying coke, a byproduct of oil refining, that was burning and was headed into town," said Capt. Chuck White of the Williamsburg Fire Department.
    ...
"The decision was based on best access to the tracks, best access to a water supply and that runoff would not be a factor because it wouldn't flow into any drainage ditches," White said.

Within minutes, the train was approaching the Henry Street crossing.Engineers stopped just long enough to uncouple the cars after the burning car.The front of the train stopped past the Transportation Center, leaving the smoking car just a few hundred feet from the fire station.

A waiting fireman was positioned atop the fire truck's ladder with a hose in hand.

"It wasn't really a flaming-type fire," White said.
    ...
"I don't know whether there was an ignition source, or if this product is subject to spontaneous combustion," White said.
    ...
White said the scene was cleared in about an hour.
