About Catherine Whelan
Catherine Whelan has run an active Suzuki violin and viola program since 1990, most recently starting SuzukiPortland in 2000.
Catherine attended the University of Toronto as a viola performance major studying with Rivka Golani, and attended viola master classes at the Banff Centre with Karen Tuttle and Raphael Hillyer.

Catherine has played in the Young Virtuosi of Montreal and the Prince George Symphony.
She was also Co-Founder, Performer, and Co-Artistic director of the Equinox Festival, a week long Chamber Music and Visual Art series in British Columbia.
Catherine teaches Viola, Violin, and Suzuki Early Childhood Education (ECE) classes.
Catherine has participated in various short term Suzuki Violin and Viola Teacher Training opportunities, including studying with Rosalind O'Keefe at the Okanagan Suzuki Institute and University of Western Washington Institute, Vera McCoy-Sulentic and Betsy Stuen-Walker at the Oregon Suzuki Institute, with Edmund Sprunger at two Portland workshops featuring Catherine's Violin & Viola students, and with Julia Hardie at the Calgary Suzuki Strings Institute.

Most recently, Catherine completed the level 1&2 ECE training with Dorothy Jones at the Ottawa (Kansas) Suzuki Strings Institute, as well as completing the "Every Child Can" class.

Catherine has also studied the "Practical Application of Body Mapping to Making Music" with Alexander Technique teacher Barbara Conable.

In 2007, Catherine has started teaching Suzuki students via the internet in Europe, a program still in an experimental phase.
During the summer of 2007, Catherine served as violin and viola faculty for the Atlantic Canada Suzuki Institute, (ACSI) in St. John's, Newfoundland; she will be returning to ACSI for the 2008 Institute.
Catherine is devoted to professional development, and life long learning as a Suzuki teacher.
Catherine is also the mother of a young daughter, a budding Suzuki violist.
Catherine Whelen has extensive musical background and proven ability to teach the Suzuki Method... Catherine has brought in professional violinists to work with anyone interested in the Suzuki Method as an integral part of the festival... Catherine Whelan has the knowledge and experience to run a very successful Suzuki Violin School.

Thanks to Catherine and the Early Childhood Program, our still very active boy, has learned to focus.
He uses this new ability every day - apart from playing the violin - also for reading, maths, writing, and language (as he is native german).
